Chapter 1 − A Surprise Trip

Once upon a time there were two young girls who were friends. Susan and Kathy liked to play jacks together, have pillow fights, toothpaste races, and lots more . . . but most of all, THEY LOVED PANDAS!

One day, their parents told them that they would be going to the San Diego Zoo for a vacation. The girls were very excited because they knew that the San Diego Zoo had pandas. They had dreamed of this day and knew just what to do because they had played pretend pandas many times. They rushed around the house, filling their backpacks with supplies for the special day: a camera and 5 rolls of film, books to read to the pandas, and construction paper and colors so they could draw pictures. They even opened Kathy’s piggy bank and used some of the money to buy 15 containers of honey!
The big day arrived and they loaded all their backpacks with all their panda gear into the back seat of the car. They reviewed their list for the 127th time and talked over their plans again. The girls hardly noticed the sights along the way. They were lost in the plans of their long-awaited panda adventure!
